- Business-like Orientation : Although MEFL has a social objective, its operating approach is not charity
based. This first principle imbues all facets of MEFL operations and underlies virtually all other guiding
principles for MEFL.
- Sustainability : MEFL aims to establish itself as a permanent source of financial services to micro
entrepreneurs who are unable to access credit through formal channels. To achieve permanence, MEFL has
to be self-sustaining and to cover all of its operational and financial costs. The aim is to be self-sufficient
so as to be a client orientation, rather than a donor orientation organisation.
- Focus on women : MEFL is focusing its lending operations on female micro-entrepreneurs as: women
head 44.9% of households; Women therefore have the highest potential for improving the lives of poor
children.
- Scale : MEFL believes that to make a real positive impact in Jamaica, it is not enough to have
a few hundred clients but to reach all of those thousands of micro entrepreneurs in Jamaica who do
not have access to credit. MEFL is committed to contribute to the establishment of micro finance
networks at the micro and macro levels in Jamaica.
- Achievability : We support business that are based on sound objectives and measurement practices,
is ambitious but achievable. We understand that success is predicated on the presence of social capital
and viable partners and on sharing and applying insights learned from previous and on-going work in the
field.
