MEFL provides a unique micro-finance model which is the result of a tripartite relationship between the Government of Canada, through the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), the Bank of Nova Scotia Jamaica Ltd. I am pleased to see that since its establishment some four years ago, MEFL has been providing high-quality financial services to Jamaican micro-entrepreneurs. The company is dedicated to strengthening the economic base of low-income, urban and rural entrepreneurs, particularly women, and has expanded into rural Jamaica in response to the need for agricultural loans. MEFL is now serving businesspeople through a third branch in Savanna-la-Mar, Westmoreland.

Through the provision of a range of loan products on a no-collateral basis, with flexible payment terms and specialist business development advice and training, MEFL is making micro-finance work for the poor. It is a powerful development agent which empowers people, improves standards of living and builds the Jamaican economy.

On behalf of Canada, I congratulate MEFL on it achievements to date and encourage its continued efforts towards economic development and growth, in the interest of enhancing the quality of life of the Jamaican people.
